* East Germany (competed in 1974) ceased to exist and the East German states joined West Germany in 1990. Germany is treated as the successor of the West Germany national team, which competed in 1954-1990.

* The USSR dissolved in 1991 into fifteen nations: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan. Russia is treated as the successor of the USSR national team, which competed in 1958-1990.

* Yugoslavia (SFR) dissolved in 1992 into five nations: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia (FR), which later renamed to Serbia & Montenegro. Serbia & Montenegro dissolved in 2006 into two nations: Serbia and Montenegro. Serbia is treated as the successor of both Yugoslavian national teams, which competed in 1930-1990 and in 1998, and the Serbia & Montenegro national team, which competed in 2006.

* Czechoslovakia dissolved in 1993 into two nations: Czech Republic and Slovakia. Czech Republic is treated as the successor of the Czechoslovakia national team, which competed in 1934-1990.

* The Dutch East Indies (competed in 1938) became Indonesia in 1949.
* Zaire (competed in 1974) became Congo DR in 1997.
